They just seem to lack the stroke of innovation that's so desperately needed when designing a Sonic level. I don't think Dimps are as god-awful that people often make them out to be.

Episode II, however does barely anything to improve anything from the first aside from visuals, and slightly better physics. All that Episode I is in truth, is Sonic Rush, mixed with a Classic game, and it's result is revolting. The boosters and Bubbles chains are some of the most annoying parts of the game, with boosters being literally EVERYWHERE in the level, and practically unavoidable, and the Bubbles chains almost always being set over a bottomless pit. Especially with it's repeated level tropes and badniks, plasticy visuals, wonky physics, terrible music and bosses, and last, but not least, these DAMNED things. Episode I was the epitome of something masquerading as a Classic game, but failing miserably and falling flat on the pavement.

Now, we move on to both episodes of Sonic 4. Rush Adventure did what Advance 3 did for Advance 2, by having a bigger emphasis on platforming, however Rush Adventure still has level design mostly built around speed. Unlike to similarly what the first and third Advance did, with a somewhat even mix of platforming and speed, it lead's towards more to what Advance 2 did, being more speed-based (hence Rush), with the gameplay being based around boosting, and doing tricks and combos to build up your boost meter. The first Sonic Rush is known for introducing a staple (and controversial) ability to the series, the Boost, allowing you to go at supersonic speeds at the press of a button, instead of building it up yourself.
